Your Wedding Program Needs a Script

The success of any special event really comes down to the “little details.”  Generally, the wedding day program gives an outline of events to take place during the ceremony (i.e., reading of a scripture, musical selection, or lighting of unity candle, etc.).  But behind those activities are details that should not be overlooked.

After you put together the information for your wedding day program, take time to write out a script with a specific timeline for each activity to breakdown task, supplies, and lead responsibilities. This should help ensure everyone involved is clear on what should take place and when.

It doesn’t need to be a wordy document. The main goal is to highlight the details for action items; for example, one item on your program might be “Reading of New Testament Scripture by Jane Doe.”  In your script, you should include:
2:15 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. – Reading of NT Scripture
  • Wedding Coordinator confirms w/Jane Doe, relative of the bride, the time and scripture selected by bride/groom.
  • Cindy, wedding planner’s assistant, to place Bible on podium 1 hr prior to ceremony; Bible should be opened to selected scripture.
  • Following ceremony, Bible collected by Cindy and stored with any other items to be returned to the bride.
In three bullet points, you specified how this action item will be handled and who is responsible for which task.  It may seem like overkill, but believe me the last thing you want is for someone come to the podium or be handed a microphone and have NO BIBLE or aimlessly flipping through pages upon pages looking for the scripture you want read.

Once you and your wedding planner have written the script for the ceremony, allow someone close but not directly involved in the planning process to read through it to see if it’s clear to the “average person.”  Choose this person wisely because you want “effective” criticism not nitpicking.

Finally, make sure you also include at the end of your script a contact list with cell phone numbers and email addresses for all suppliers and participants in the wedding.  This way if he/she needs to reach them prior to the ceremony, they can quickly access information to call, text, or email them.

Creating a script can make sure “little details” don’t become BIG PROBLEMS!
