"Cutting" the Cake

A couple of years ago, a Bride wouldn't tarry over a decision to spend money on making her wedding day a living fairy tale. BUT, times have changed, so we have to change. It's no longer feasible to plan your wedding day without scrutinizing each line item of your budget. Therefore when faced with some tough economic decisions, what gets cut?

Seemingly, a new trend is to cut out having a traditional wedding cake. Some have opted for gourmet cookies, petit fours, or cupcakes. The rationale behind this is individual portions will be just as attractive, but less expensive. I don't know...call me "old fashioned" or a "traditionalist," but I think "cutting" the cake is a mistake.

After reading through a few articles on the history behind wedding cakes, I have come to realize, apart from the early 19th century English aristocratic distinction, wedding cakes serve a great symbolic purpose. It's the first thing a new husband and wife will do together...no longer simply the Bride and Groom, but Husband and Wife! To me, this display of unity is important. Skipping over or eliminating some traditions has been society’s downfall in a lot of ways.

I'm all for "updating" some ancient rituals, but doing away with a wedding cake altogether seems...well, sad. Is there a way to bridge the issues of cutting cost and keeping tradition? I would encourage you to TRY!
